The cosmology section is the deep, dark bottom of our web site and may not be everybodies 'cup of tea'. The maths generated by some theoretical physicists is astonishing. We put a man on the moon just by using Sir Issac Newton's (1642-1727) theory of gravity! It wasn't even necarssary to use the complicated mathmatics of Einstien's theories (1879-1955).
together the many pieces of the puzzle which has given us clues about our universe's beginning. The final convincing came from the search for cosmic background radiation (CBR). The COBE satellite launched in 1989, took only 8 minutes to verify the conclusions of measurements taken in 1964.
Large Scale Structure of the Universe
Cosmology is about the observation and theory of the universe; from the ultra small scale
to the largest scale. In this part we concentrate on the large
scale. But remember it is probably
small scale processes that cause the large scale evolution of the uUniverse. Some of the questions not considered here are: Why the universe had a beginning; what determines the nature and contents of the universe; what are the fundamental processes that result in the phenomena of time and space; why there are electrons, quarks etc,...? While these notes contain mathematics, no mathematical experience is assumed, and the notes are self-contained. All mathematical manipulations are in fact quite elementary. |
